Google agrees to pay $19 million to refund in-app purchases

Earlier this year it was reported that Apple was required by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to pay back $32.5 million over in-app purchases. Now, Google has agreed to fork out at least $19 million for the very same thing.

The major issue with these cases is that in-app purchases are being made without the account holders explicit consent. In general it’s believed that many of these purchases are made by children while using their parents’ accounts. The FTC’s statement reads that Google will “ensure that it obtains express, informed consent from consumers before charging them for items sold in mobile apps” in future.

Google has already taken steps to ensure that users are aware that an app contains in-app purchases. Any app with in-app purchases is no longer labeled free on Google Play.
