Ex-Respawn devs partner to form Gravity Well

Two ex-Respawn developers, Jon Shiring and Drew McCoy, have partnered to form Gravity Well, a studio that describes itself as a small, triple-A studio that wants to explore “bold new ideas exclusively for next-gen hardware and PCs.”

Both Shiring and McCoy left Respawn back in February 2020, and plan to hire around 80-85 people to form the core of Gravity Well. The studio’s website is currently seeking applications for 11 different roles ranging from an (eventual) LA Office Manager to (remote) roles in narrative, QA, engineering and audio.

“We want to keep making games that the team actually wants to play after work,” Gravity Well’s website states.

“We take team health as an absolute top priority,” McCoy wrote. “That means we are anti-crunch. That means good compensation. That means everyone at Gravity Well has creative freedom, because when someone else makes all of the decisions, work isn’t fun and the end product isn’t as good.”

“Given the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re starting the studio for remote work from the very start,” added Shiring. “Since one of the core values of Gravity Well is increased diversity, we’re excited about not being hamstrung by relocation or work visa issues. We want to hire the best talent in the industry, regardless of where you live.”

Both McCoy and Shiring have worked on a range of titles including the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Titanfall and Apex Legends.
