Smash Bros, Splatoon 2 Australasian Open tournaments start in March

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 Australasian Open tournaments will start up in March, Nintendo has today advised.

Dubbed the Australasian Open, online qualifiers for both games will start in early March, with Grand Finals kicking off during Supanova Melbourne in early April 2019.

We’ve detailed the tournaments below.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Australasian Open

“To determine the first Australian and New Zealand Super Smash Bros. Ultimate champions, individuals will battle it out in Timed Stock matches with low items – including the powerful Smash Ball, which can turn up at any time to seal an emphatic victory or give the underdog a chance to turn the tables and snatch a win,” Nintendo said.

Online qualifiers take place over the following dates:

  • Australian online qualifier 1: 11.00 am AEDT, 2 March
  • Australian online qualifier 2: 11.00 am AEDT, 9 March
  • New Zealand online qualifier 1: 1.00 pm NZDT, 2 March
  • New Zealand online qualifier 2: 1.00 pm NZDT, 9 March

Players must be Australian or New Zealander and 13 years of age or over. To register, head here.

Splatoon 2 Australasian Open

Australia and New Zealand’s freshest Splatoon 2 squid squad (or octo-posse) will be decided through Turf Wars and Ranked Battles, where strong teamwork and clever strategy will be needed in heated four-on-four match-ups,” Nintendo advised. “Registered teams will face off against each other in a best-of-three single elimination bracket.”

Online qualifiers take place over the following dates:

  • Online qualifier 1: 11.00 am AEDT, 2 March
  • Online qualifier 2: 11.00 am AEDT, 9 March

Both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 are both available on Nintendo Switch.
