EA cancels Black Panther game, closes dev studio

Ouch.

EA has cancelled its planned Black Panther game and has closed the dev studio behind it, Cliffhanger Games, reads a new report from IGN.

Cliffhanger’s closure is linked to a larger round of layoffs within EA, the report continues.

IGN cites an email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, who states that layoffs within the company as occurring to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities”.

“These decisions are hard,” Miele continued. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

Both Cliffhanger and the single-player Black Panther game were revealed back in 2023, though we’ve not heard much more about either since.

“Our mission is to build an expansive and reactive world that empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector, the Black Panther,” EA said at the time.
