Channel 7’s Brian Taylor calls Essendon’s Esports team “real nerds”

Channel 7’s Brian Taylor dismissed the Essendon Bombers Esports team as “computer type boffins” and “real nerds” as part of AFL coverage on Friday night.

As Channel 7’s camera panned over the Esports team, Taylor exclaimed, “They all look, ah, rather unique in their own way,” before telling commentator Bruce McAvaney that “they they’re all different, Bruce… computer type boffins. There’s some real nerds in amongst them!”

The insults continued after the game, where as part of his Roaming Brian segment, Taylor dismissed the players — and Carlo ‘Looch’ La Civita specifically — as, “Not the normal sort of football following type.”

“Nevertheless,” he continued, as laughter from other Seven commentators can be heard in the  background, “[they’re] very good when it comes to pushing buttons and going left and right.

“I’m not sure what it is you do… but very, very nice.”

You can watch the full exchange from the 7.30 mark of the video below.

Taylor, who also features on Triple M, had his dismissal described as “trademark cheeky commentary” by the radio station. Triple M publicised the exchange saying Taylor “took the piss” out of the team.

What do you make of Taylor’s behaviour and the way Esports have been portrayed by both Channel 7 and Triple M?

We’ve reached out to the Essendon Bombers and Riot Games for comment.
