Embracer shutters Square Enix Montreal after acquisition (and a rebrand)

Whelp.

Embracer Group has shut down Square Enix Montreal, now known as Onoma, just months after its acquisition of the studio.

Adding insult to injury, Square Enix Montreal completed its rebrand to Onoma in the early days of October.

Bloomberg reports that the closure of Onoma was for cost-cutting purposes, and also reports that Eidos Montreal will have projects scaled back as a result. Embracer will also send resources to assist in Playground Games’ Fable reboot.

Embracer Group announced its intention to acquire several western Square Enix studios back in May of this year. Studios acquired by Embracer include Onoma, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos.

As a result of the acquisition, Embracer also owns the IP to classic franchises such as Thief, Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex and Tomb Raider.
