Embracer sells off Star Trek Online, Arc Games, Cryptic Studios

But retains the publishing rights to Remnant.

Embracer Group is continuing to de-invest after a long period of buying everything up, this time selling off Star Trek Online, developer Cryptic Studios, and publisher Arc Games.

The buyer, Project Golden Arc, Inc., appears to gain the rights to titles Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, Torchlight, and Hyper Light Breaker as part of the $30 million USD deal. Project Golden Arc is “owned and led by members of the Arc Games management team,” according to Embracer, and has been financed by Torchlight Infinite‘s XD Inc. DECA Games, which also works on Star Trek Online, looks to remain with Embracer Group as well.

Keene ‘Pundus’ Sin, who works as an artist on Star Trek Online, took to Reddit to say that, “there won’t be any changes to the current development team,” following the news.

The Remnant franchise isn’t part of the deal, though, with publishing rights transferring over to THQ Nordic as part of the sale. Arc Games, however, will remain as a co-publisher of Remnant From the Ashes and Remnant 2.

Also excluded from the deal are the rights to MMO Fellowship, which will transfer over to Coffee Stain (when that entity is spun out of Embracer next month).

“This transaction supports our key priorities by strengthening our focus on strategic assets and core IPs in Embracer while improving profitability and free cash flow,” said Phil Rogers, CEO of Embracer Group.

“The deal also allows online multiplayer game Fellowship, developed by a talented external team in Stockholm, to find a great home within Coffee Stain Group. I would like to thank the teams at Arc and Cryptic for their hard work over the past four years and wish them all the best as we are confident they will thrive and develop in the years ahead.”

Embracer Group acquired Star Trek Online back in December 2021 when it bought up publisher Perfect World. After a name change to Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, Embracer held onto Gearbox Publishing when selling the remainder of Gearbox, alongside the Borderlands IP, to Take-Two Interactive in March 2024. Gearbox San Francisco was renamed back to Arc Games following the Take-Two sale.

Update [4 December 2025]: A representative from Arc Games has confirmed with Stevivor that the studio does indeed hold the Star Trek Online IP, and that developers from Embracer’s DECA Games have moved over to Cryptic Studios to continue to work on the MMO.

“Arc Games continues to hold the rights to Star Trek Online and we can confirm that the same great team is still working on the title,” the representative told Stevivor. “While DECA will remain under Embracer, the Star Trek Online team from DECA has joined Cryptic Studios under Arc Games and will continue working on Star Trek Online, as well as Neverwinter and Champions Online.

Mirroring Pundis, the representative continued to assert that, “development will not be impacted, so players can continue to expect updates for Star Trek Online and other beloved MMO titles.”
