Elden Ring Nightreign two-player mode “overlooked”, now coming 30 July

Good news, couples!

Update: Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have confirmed that two-player mode will be added into Elden Ring Nightreign on 30 July as part of patch 1.02.

“Additionally, patch 1.02 will include quality-of-life UI improvements, including more Relics filtering options,” Bandai Namco said in a press release.

Original story [4 June]: Elden Ring Nightreign two-player mode has been “overlooked” but may be added in a post-launch patch, its director has confirmed.

Speaking with IGNNightreign director Junya Ishizaki said two-player mode was “overlooked during development”.

“As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it’s at the core of Nightreign,” Ishizaki said. “Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I’m just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start.

“And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.”

Ishizaki previously told the site that two-player mode wasn’t included due to balancing.

“This was largely a game balancing decision, rather than a game design decision,” Ishizaki said, speaking of single-player and three-player modes. “So it came as development progressed.”

Update: FromSoftware has now confirmed that duos will be added to Nightreign at a later date.

“In addition to the DLC releasing later this year, new additions will be gradually implemented, including enhanced fights against existing Nightlords starting this month, as well as Duo Expeditions at a later date,” FromSoftware has today confirmed. We’ll keep you informed as news on duos progresses.

Expect Elden Ring Nightreign from 30 May 2025 on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.
