Three years ago, a Call of Duty game was almost set in ancient Rome

GamesRadar today reports that Vicarious Visions was at work on a Call of Duty game set in ancient Rome.

In development from 2008, the first- and third-person action game starred a soldier in Caesar’s Tenth Legion.

Developed on Xbox 360 and planned for a simultaneous release on PS3 and Windows PC in 2013, there also was a possibility the title would have been moved to Xbox One and PS4.

In the end, Activision’s Bobbi Kotick nixed the game, cautious that Activision would oversaturate the market with Call of Duty titles in 2013.

Call of Duty: Ghosts was instead released in that same year on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4, while Crytek’s very similar Ryse: Son of Rome debuted on the Xbox One.
