EB Games locks Switch 2 midnight launches behind subscription tier

That, or you need to give them your original Switch right now.

EB Games Australia has locked upcoming Switch 2 midnight launches behind its paid EB World subscription service. That, or those looking to get their Switch 2 as early as possible will need to trade in their original Switch today to secure what the retailer is calling a “Fast Pass”.

The retailer it confirmed it will host midnight launches in a number of stores across NSW, Queensland, Victoria, ACT, South Australia, and Tasmania. Those start from 9 pm local time on 4 June.

Moreover, a number of earlier breakfast launches will be held across the country from 7 am local time on 5 June, the actual launch date of the Switch 2.

If you don’t want to pay the $50 AUD annual subscription fee, EB Games also confirmed that customers can “trade… to secure your fast pass”.

Needless to say, the internet has not received this news very well.

“So you’re basically paying $50 (or losing $200+) just to get a console 9 hours early? No thank you,” wrote one user.

“I don’t have a fast pass but I do have a hard pass,” wrote another.

“Would have picked mine up at midnight without the scummy paywall. Looks like there’s no option for a 3-month membership online anymore, which makes it feel even scummier,” said another. “Wild that they want me to pay $49 to be able to pay them $900 for a Switch 2 and Pro Controller a few hours earlier. Hope it was worth killing any remaining goodwill toward their business from those that preordered.”

How do you feel about EB Games’ move? Sound off in the comments area, below.

The Switch 2 heads to Australia from 5 June. We’ve recently previewed it here.
