EA Sports brings retro-styled Anniversary Mode to NHL 14

Man, we’ve already gushed about how amazing NHL 94 was. Now, we get a little piece of it inside NHL 14, thanks to the game’s new Anniversary Mode.

Stylised like NHL 94, the mode puts retro star icons around players who are being controlled, brings back a three-button control system, adds a retro soundtrack and does away with offsides, icing and penalties.

EA Sports explains the mode in this nifty little video:

The mode is said to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary, but it’s also fitting as NHL 14 is one of the few EA Sports titles that won’t debut on next-gen consoles this year. If it’s not going forward to PS4 and Xbox One, it might as well go backwards and get all nostalgic, eh?

NHL 14 will be available from 13 September on Xbox 360 and PS3.
