EA layoffs reportedly impact Melburnian employees at Firemonkeys

Our hearts go out to those impacted.

A round of layoffs at EA have impacted Melburnian developers at Firemonkeys Studio, according to a report from journalist Jackson Ryan.

Quoting an EA spokesperson, Ryan was told that the publisher is “making some changes to the structure of Firemonkeys Studio,” the studio that’s worked on mobile titles including Need for Speed No Limits and the Real Racing and Flight Control franchises.

In his report Ryan denoted the changes as “[m]ore layoffs in the video games sector in Australia.”

Ryan continued to report that EA said the changes will allow Firemonkeys “to focus on supporting live services for The Sims FreePlay.” The publisher also stated that “robust” support for Firemonkey’s core racing titles will “transition to existing teams at EA.”

In late March, EA head Andrew Wilson announced plans to layoff approximately 6% of the company’s workforce. Firemonkeys Studio has over 120 staff; it’s unclear how many have been impacted by this decision.

We’ll report back as we hear more.
