EA blames Battlefield 2042 failure on Halo Infinite, COVID: report

EA has used an internal town hall meeting to blame Battlefield 2042‘s failure on Halo Infinite and COVID-19, a report claims.

XFire reports that EA Chief Studios Officer, Laura Miele, said that Halo Infinite‘s surprise multiplayer launch — just four days ahead of Battlefield 2042‘s release — directly impacted the title. Moreover, Miele suggested Infinite‘s surprised drop hurt Battlefield despite a good “early critical reception” of the title.

EA also said that the COVID-19 pandemic meant that DICE “ended up with more new variables in development”, with Miele admittting that the title “failed to meet the expectations” of both players and EA. She added it was “really important to acknowledge” additional issues caused by moving the title to a new version of its Frostbite engine.

Mock reviews of the product — that is, reviews conducted ahead of release and used for EA’s own internal purposes — had the game pegged in the “high 70s to low 80s,” according to EA. Our own review came in at a scathing 4.5/10, with reviewer Luke Lawrie saying it was not ready for release. Since its availability, we’ve chronicled intangible buildings and a sniper rifle that can outperform an anti-tank weapon when it comes to blowing up tanks; said issues played a part in EA delaying Battlefield 2042‘s first season until later this year.

Battlefield 2042 is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5.
