The publisher has yet to confirm.
EA is allegedly “quietly parking” the Need for Speed franchise, according to Speedhunters’ Matthew Everingham.
Everingham, an Aussie car photographer and owner of the Speedhunters website, took to social media with the allegations.
“Speedhunters is on ice,” he wrote on Instagram. “EA shelved Need For Speed, and that means no more funding for the site. Grateful for everything — the trips, the stories, the lifelong mates.”
“Speedhunters has been shelved before, but this time feels different,” he wrote on Facebook. “With EA Games quietly parking the Need For Speed franchise — which funded the site — the future looks uncertain. It might return in some form… but I wouldn’t hold my breath.”
EA has yet to comment on the matter, though the publisher has announced that online servers for Need for Speed Rivals will be taken down in October.
Back in 2020, EA closed down Need for Speed dev Ghost Games, putting the franchise back in the hands of Criterion. Following that, EA shifted most of Criterion over to the Battlefield franchise in 2023, leaving only a “core group” to work on the racing franchise.
We’ll have more on the state of Need for Speed as it’s known. We’ve reached out to EA for comment.
