Doom 4 was scrapped because it felt too much like Call of Duty

Speaking with NoClip, id Software’s Marty Stratton has said that Doom 4 was cancelled because it felt too much like Call of Duty and not enough like Doom itself.

“It was much closer to something like [Call of Duty],” Stratton, Producer at id, said. “[There were] a lot more cinematic[s]; a lot more story to it. A lot more characters around you that you were with throughout the course of the game.”

Stratton also confirmed that Doom 4 took place on Earth.

“It didn’t feel as much like Doom as I think a lot of us expected it would feel or hoped it would feel,” Stratton concluded.

As a result, Doom was rebooted and was released earlier in the year on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4. We reviewed it here.
