Developer Serenity Forge says Google says it removed the game over a terms of service violation.
Doki Doki Literature Club has been removed from the Google Play Store after four months of availability, with developer Serenity Forge stating Google removed is as “the game’s content violates their Terms of Service in its depiction of sensitive themes.”
“DDLC is widely celebrated for portraying mental health in a way that meaningfully connects deeply with players around the world, helping them feel heard, understood, and less alone on their journey,” the studio continued as part of a larger statement.
“Managing to achieve that—making a truly meaningful difference by using the power of fiction to connect to others—is what I’m most grateful for. It inspires me every day to keep making cool new things, things that can really reach others, especially those in need of connection.”
Those who’ve played Doki Doki Literature Club know it looks innocent and harmless, but very quickly gets dark and explores themes of self-harm and suicide. The title has numerous content warnings, including a statement on iOS that reads, “this game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed.”
Serenity Forge added that it is “continuing to do everything we can to find a path forward for getting DDLC reinstated on the Google Play Store,” including looking for “alternate methods of distribution on Android devices.”
Doki Doki Literature Club is available on a number of other platforms including Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and iOS.
