The Diversion: You can’t buy this Bulbasaur planter, but you sure can print it

Claudia Ng had the best idea ever for a Pokémon planter… so long as she didn’t actually reference Pokémon when selling it on Shapeways, a site that allows for the design, print and sale of 3D-designed objects. Or so she thought.

Even then, it seems like Nintendo wasn’t cool with the item. Good for them, we guess, but bad for the rest of us.

“Shapeways got a cease and desist from Pokémon International for infringement. They received this on Friday, and Shapeways took it down within the last hour,” Ng said to Polygon. “They are asking for all the money associated with this model and shapeways will not be printing or shipping any order for the past few days.”

“I thought that this would fall under the boundaries of derivative and transformative work,” she confessed. “I’m also not a lawyer, and I guess that is the least defined of rules and regulation.”

Ng has graciously posted the design for those who want the planter and who have access to a 3D printer.
