Pikachu had a planned third form after Raichu

Infamous Pokémon Pikachu had a third form planned, it was recently revealed.

Japanese newspaper Yomiuri recently interviewed Pikachu’s illustrator, Atsuko Nishida, alongside Designer Ken Sugimori and revealed that Pikachu and Raichu were to be joined by Gorochu, a ridiculously powerful character.

“It was ‘Pika[chu)], ‘Rai[chu)’, and ‘Goro[chu]’,” Nishida said (as translated by Siliconera). “The Pokémon known as Gorochu bared fangs and even had a pair of horns.”

Siliconera points out the name comes from ‘Goro Goro,’ which is loosely translated to ‘rolling thunder.’

Sugimori said Gorochu presented too many balancing issues and unfortunately was cut as a result. To this date, Gorochu remains a bit of a myth, even in the face of a whopping 802 current Pokémon.

Never fear, Gorochu — we won’t forget you.
