Mario Kart: The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning projecting “games” during intermissions

The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning is projecting ridiculously large “games” of 16-bit Super Mario Kart on the ice during intermissions.

The Lightning, who are currently facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals, have mocked up matches between both the Lightning’s mascot, Lightning Bug, and players representing both the Penguins’ and round one’s Detroit Red Wings’ mascots.

Both videos above were captured by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Seth Rorabaugh.

Detroit was eliminated a while back, but the video with the Red Wings’ mascot — a purple octopus — was recently used cause the Penguins were just a bit too good for the Lightning.

“Actually, we had one [“game with the Penguins mascot ready… but the outcome of the game was a downer going into the intermission having just given up a goal with 10 seconds left in the second period,” the Lightning’s VP of Game Presentation, John Franzone, told GameSpot.

Pretty neat, eh?

The Eastern Conference Finals are currently all tied up, 2-2.
