Detroit Red Wings use Oculus VR to show off new stadium to season ticket holders

The Detroit Red Wings are using the Oculus Rift to help season ticket holders select their seats at their new stadium, the Little Caesar’s Arena.

Every Red Wings full season ticket holder can head to the District Detroit Preview Center for a VIP tour, using the Oculus Rift to provide a VR-based walkthrough.

The Rift powers a product called Virtual Venue RT [Real Time], as created by IOMEDIA. Neither IOMEDIA nor the Red Wings plan to release the experience to non-season ticket holders.

“A picture is worth a thousand words, but a virtual experience is priceless,” IOMEDIA’s Steven Korian said. “You get very emotionally tied to the new venue without ever having stepped foot in it. Virtual Venue RT brings fans right into the venue, and brings it home in a way that you can’t otherwise experience.”

Construction on the long-standing NHL team’s new stadium began back in April 2015. The Red Wings are expected to transition from the current Joe Louis Arena to Little Caesar’s Arena in 2017.
