Disney+ adds ESPN in Australia, undercuts Kayo on North American sports

Take note, Foxtel.

Disney+ will add ESPN to its streaming service offerings here in Australia from 26 March, potentially providing huge savings for those who rely upon rival Kayo for North American sports.

ESPN and ESPN2 will be added to both Disney+ Standard and Disney+ Premium packages, allowing users the chance to stream sports like the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and more.

Disney+ is a steal compared to Kayo — its two-screen 1080p service is priced at $13.99 AUD/month, heaps lower than Kayo’s one-screen 1080p offering at $25 AUD.

In terms of 4K, Disney+ Premium allows for four-screen 4K streaming at $17.99 AUD/month compared to Kayo’s two-screen 4K service at $35 AUD/month.

Obviously, Kayo’s not going to have heaps of cricket, nor netball, nor the AFL or NRL, so Disney+ may not be for everyone. Personally, I’ve just had to drop $35 AUD for Kayo to watch hockey’s 4 Nations Face-Off, and ESPN carries four of its seven total games. All that, plus Disney, Hulu, Fox, Marvel, Star Wars and the rest of the Disney lineup? Yes please.

ESPN will remain accessible on Kayo, Foxtel, and even FetchTV — the latter is technically the cheapest for ESPN, at $6 AUD/month, but that also requires the purchase of a FetchTV box.

Are you interested in watching ESPN on Disney+, or are you sticking with Kayo? ESPN will also be available within Disney+ in New Zealand.

This post was first published on 11 February and has been updated to reflect ESPN’s Australian launch date.
