Discord will soon make you choose a unique username

Goodbye, FartWaffle#4535.

Discord will soon make its user choose new, unique usernames.

The days of Stevivor#5259 are numbered, with the need to change to unique usernames rolling out “over the coming weeks”.

Usernames can be a max of 32 characters and can’t attempt to imitate people, groups, companies, Discord staff or server messages.

“[A display name] is your most prominent form of identity on Discord, and it is how other users will see you in DMs where a friend nickname is not set, in servers where a server nickname is not set, and in other places like friend requests,” Discord said.

The rollout will be chronological, with those who’ve signed up for Discord first getting the early crack at changing their usernames. The longer it took you to join Discord, the longer it’ll be before you have access to the feature.

Steve's the owner and Editor-in-Chief of Stevivor.com, the country’s leading independent video games outlet. Steve arrived in Australia back in 2001 on what was meant to be a three-month working holiday before deciding to emigrate and, eventually, becoming a citizen.

Stevivor is a combination of ‘Steve’ and ‘Survivor’, which made more sense back in 2001 when Jeff Probst was up in Queensland. The site started as Steve’s travel blog before transitioning over into video games.
