Destiny 2 weapon slots may change back to resemble the ones found in the original Destiny, developer Bungie has conceded.
Destiny 2 changed the Primary, Special and Heavy slots to Kinetic, Energy and Power instead. The move was done as part of several changes to make for easier balancing of PvE and PvP play and to make the title more accessible to new players.
The (remaining, dwinding) Destiny 2 player base has long disagreed with the change, with most saying PvP has suffered the most. Players have requested that Destiny 2‘s weapon slots be changed back to their Destiny equivalents, and Bungie is finally opening up to the idea.
“I think that’s a reasonable request,” Design Lead, Josh Hamrick, said in a recent Twitch stream. “Ultimately though, we want to do something better. Either way, we’re actively working on weapon slot changes right now. Like, right now.”
“This is a thing we are going to change,” added Community Manager David ‘DeeJ’ Dague, adding that “are a lot of things in playtest” at the moment.
Senior PvP Designer Kevin Yanes later suggested that a public test server, similar to what you’d find in competitive titles like Overwatch, might be implemented for Destiny 2.
“We’ve heard the feedback that the community wants more involvement or at least more of a conversation,” he said. “We’re actually looking at ways with the stream, but even in-game, you know there’s a big desire for testing builds early so it’s something we’re thinking about and talking about and working on.”
What do you make of this news — would you rather have the original Destiny weapon slots back, or are you happy for Bungie to try “to do something better”?
Destiny 2 is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
