Destiny 2 cheaters to pay Bungie $13.5m USD in damages

Oof.

Destiny 2 cheaters have agreed to pay $13.5 million USD in damages to Bungie in order to settle ongoing litigation filed by the developer.

Elite Boss Tech, a Canadian company owned by Robert James Duthie Nelson, was named in ligitation which also targeted a listing of unnamed ‘Doe’ defendants.

As part of the settlement, the defendants have agreed that the software, which “displays a graphical overlay” onto Destiny 2, injected code into the shooter’s copyrighted code, which in turn violates the title’s user agreement.

As a result, Nelson will now be required to pay $2,000 USD for each time the software was downloaded, TorrentFreak reports. As the software was downloaded a total of 6,765 times, the defendants will be required to pony up $13.5 million USD.

As part of the settlement, the defendants are prohibited from using any online resources to create, amend or contribute to cheating software.

Destiny 2 is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5 and Stadia.
