Despite their names, Toad and Toadette are genderless, platonic pals

We’re a bit late to the party on this, but it’s too interesting to pass up.

Nintendo’s Koichi Hayashida, on the press junket for the recently-released Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, has said that the beloved characters don’t identify with a set gender, despite their very specific dress and names.

“This is maybe a little bit of a strange story, but we never really went out of our way to decide on the sex of these characters, even though they have somewhat gendered appearances,” Hayashida reportedly said.

Hayashida added that Toad and Toadette are neither neither mushrooms (shocking) or toads (obvious).

“But I think what I can say is that Toadette and Toad are not siblings,” he added. “Perhaps it would be more accurate to say they are adventure pals. And that’s certainly true here [in Captain Toad].”
