Dead Island 2 players on last-gen consoles cannot host co-op sessions

They'll need to rely on current-gen players instead.

Dead Island 2 survivors on last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One will not be able to host co-op sessions at launch, developer Dambuster Studios has confirmed.

While the title does support cross-gen co-op PS4 and PS5, or Xbox One to Xbox Series S & X — but not cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation — those on current-gen will need to kick off a co-op session when the game becomes available.

“The games aren’t hosted on servers; they use the peer-to-peer model instead,” Dambuster wrote.

“This means the first player hosts the game, and the second and third join them,” the studio continued. “Due to the game’s graphic requirements, the host must play on the latest generation console (PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S) or one of the Generation 8+ consoles (PlayStation 4 Pro/Xbox One X). Base Generation 8 consoles (PlayStation 4/Xbox One|S) will not be able to host the game at launch, but they will be able to join it. We’re working on giving the option to host on all consoles in the future.”

PC players can play with one another without any of the concerns detailed above.

Expect Dead Island 2 on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5 from 21 April. We reviewed the title here.
