Charles Martinet is no longer the voice of Mario

But remains a Mario Ambassador.

Charles Martinet will no longer be the voice of Mario, Nintendo has today announced.

“Charles Martinet has been the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time, as far back as Super Mario 64,” Nintendo began in a statement.

“Charles is now moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador,” Nintendo continued. “With this transitition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all!

“It has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him.”

A video featuring Martinet and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has also been promised for “a future date”.

It’s unclear why Martinet is stepping down from the role, and it’s also unclear if he’ll be voicing Mario in the upcoming Super Mario Bros Wonder. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Expect Super Mario Bros Wonder on Nintendo Switch from 20 October.
