CD Projekt Red sells stake in GOG, with both promising business as usual

GOG and CD Projekt Red co-founder Michał Kiciński is now the full owner of GOG.

GOG and CD Projekt Red co-founder Michał Kiciński is now the full owner of GOG after CD Projekt Red has sold its stake in the DRM-free game preservation digital storefront.

Michał Kiciński and partner Marcin Iwiński co-founded both companies, GOG and CD Projekt Red. GOG came second, back in 2007, with the vision to “bring classic games back to players, and make sure that once you buy a game, it truly belongs to you, forever.”

In a statement, GOG says CD Projekt Red’s sale of its stake to Kiciński will mark a “new chapter… doubling down on that vision,” and that “DRM-free is more central to GOG than ever”.

CD Projekt Red walks away with 90.7 million Polish złoty (approx. $25.2 million USD) as part of the deal, and Kiciński will hold onto his 10% of share capital of the studio.

“Selling GOG fits CD Projekt’s long-term strategy,” reads a portion of the statement’s FAQ. “CD Projekt wants to focus its full attention on creating top-quality RPGs and providing our fans with other forms of entertainment based on our brands. This deal lets CD Projekt keep that focus, while GOG gets stronger backing to pursue its own mission.”

The statement continues on to say that the relationship between CD Projekt Red and GOG will remain strong, and that “upcoming titles from the studio” — likely including The Witcher 4 — will be released on the platform.
