Assassin’s Creed will focus on history but modern day arc remains

Ubisoft also admitted that the modern day arc has faltered somewhat without Desmond.

While Assassin’s Creed will continue with its modern day story arc, the franchise will primarily focus on its historical side, Ubisoft’s Marc-Alexis Coté has confirmed.

“As we move forward, our goal is to put history back at the centre of the players’ experience,” Coté said, as reported by Eurogamer. “The modern day narrative will serve to enhance, rather than overshadow, the historical journey. By drawing meaningful contrast between past and present, we aim to restore the balance that was once the hallmark of the franchise.”

There will still be stuff in there for those (like me) who enjoy the modern day story arc, Coté stressed.

“”The modern day storyline will explore deeper themes of memory, identity and autonomy, how the past shapes who we are, and how controlling this past can impact our future,” he said. “These themes will allow us to reflect on contemporary issues: freedom versus control, the power of knowledge and the tension between individuality and conformity, all through the lens of history.”

Coté continued on to say that while this “new direction will take shape with Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, this new strategy will be employed in future titles beyond Shadows.

The head of the Assassin’s Creed franchise also pinpointed when the modern day story arc faltered: Assassin’s Creed 3.

“Ending Desmond [Miles]’s arc was a difficult decision,” Coté said, referring to the protagonist’s death at the end of the title, “and afterward, the modern storyline struggled to find its footing.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now scheduled for a 14 February 2025 release on Windows PC via Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Epic Games Store alongside Mac, Amazon Luna, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5.
