Anson Mount joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Pike

Anson Mount will join Star Trek Discovery as Captain Christopher Pike, Variety reports.

Spoilers are ahead — be warned.

Pike is of course the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, a ship that was briefly shown during Discovery‘s season one finale. As the show bowed out for its inaugural, viewers were left open-mouthed as Discovery responded to a distress call coming from the Enterprise itself.

Mount will be the third actor to portray Pike in Star Trek‘s Prime Universe (aka, not counting the 2009 Star Trek franchise of films). He’s preceded by Jeffrey Hunter, who starred as Pike in Star Trek‘s “The Menagerie” and Sean Kenney, who played an older, wheelchair-bound Pike in the same episode.

Counting the 2009 alternate timeline film franchise, Mount is the fifth Pike after Bruce Greenwood.

It’s worth noting that Mount bears a striking resemblance to Hunter’s Pike. With the Enterprise in play during Discovery‘s second season, it’s likely we’ll see recasts of two other major characters: Majel Barrett’s Number One and Leonard Nimoy’s legendary Spock (below, with Hunter’s Pike). Both characters should be serving aboard the Enterprise alongside Captain Pike at this point in the Star Trek timeline.

With all that said, Discovery‘s showrunners want to make it clear that the show will remain focused on the Crossfield-class ship.

“The show is called ‘Discovery.’ It’s not ‘Enterprise,'” Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman told Variety.

“So yes, the Enterprise will play a part of Season 2 but it will absolutely not overshadow Discovery. And I think with Enterprise’s arrival in the finale we recognize that the audience has a lot of questions about our synchronicity with the original series, which really means or synchronicity with canon.”

An air date for Star Trek: Discovery‘s second season has not yet been detailed. Here in Australia, you can stream the entire first season on Netflix.
