Animated Mario movie coming from Minions studio

A new, animated Super Mario Bros. film is in the works by Minions and Despicable Me studio Illumination.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will co-produce the film with Despicable Me Franchise Producer, Chris Meladandri.

The film will be financed by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, with Universal distributing the motion picture around the world.

“”With this project, Nintendo will pursue its goals of effectively leveraging its intellectual properties in mediums outside of video games, and of bringing smiles to people around the world,” Nintendo stated in a Japanese press release.

The movie should hit theatres ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
