Animal Crossing New Horizons: Free update and paid Switch 2 version coming January

Huzzah!

If you’re ready to relive your pandemic go-to, Animal Crossing New Horizons will offer up a free update to existing users alongside a new Switch 2 version from 15 January 2026.

A host of new content will be introduced to the base game on Switch, including “features a new resort hotel run by Kapp’n’s family, new themed items and characters,” and more. Those who have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will also receive “extra exclusives like Slumber Islands,” Nintendo added.

If you’d rather a new, flashier version of the New Horizons, the Switch 2 version of the game will offer 4K in TV mode, mouse controls with Joy-Con 2 contollers, 12-player online multiplayer sessions, and CameraPlay support.

We didn’t review Animal Crossing New Horizons back in the day as Nintendo Australia and New Zealand withheld pre-release code in the region citing a worry about leaks.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is currently available on Nintendo Switch. The Switch 2 version and the free update are expected on 15 January 2026.
