Agony ditches Adults Only patch ahead of release

Kickstarted game Agony has shared revised details of how it plans to provide access to censored content that was removed from the game.

The title, classified R18+ here in Australia back in March, was previously edited to ensure it didn’t receive an Adults Only rating from North America’s ESRB.

“For many months we have been conducting interviews with age-rating companies in order not to cut out entire scenes from the game but at the same time modify it enough (e.g. just slightly changing the camera’s frame) to get an M (Mature) rating instead of AO (Adult-Only) rating,” developer PlayWay previously advised. “AO rating means that the game could not be released on PS4 and Xbox One, and we would not keep the promise made on the Kickstarter.”

At that time, PlayWay stressed that every platform would receive the same title, and that the PC version of the game would receive an Adults Only patch that would add the censored content.

Today, PlayWay advised that the Adults Only patch will not be released.

“Due to legal issues, we are not going to be able to release the Adult Only patch,” an update on Steam reads. “However, that content does not affect the game in any significant way because the deleted material that was supposed to be added in the latest version of the patch is from two endings (out of seven) and some scenes that may be unlocked only after the end of the game. We are going to publish a comparison video on May 30th, 2018 so you will not miss out anything.”

PlayWay also advised that, “we have managed to include a lot of things that we originally wanted to provide in the patch in the final game” and that the “censorship now affects only several seconds from two endings (out of seven) and some scenes that may be unlocked only after the end of the game.”

The developer added that, “we will be able to show [the censored content] to you in a video that we are planning to release soon.”

Agony is available today on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
