The long-running MMO looks to be in good hands...
Star Trek Online‘s new executive producer, Thomas Marrone, has doubled down on Cryptic’s promise to “grow” the long-running MMO.
Speaking with yours truly over on TrekMovie, Marrone told me what players can expect from the tag team of himself alongside Cryptic’s new (old) CEO, Jack Emmert.
“The big change between Jack and myself now being ‘in charge’ is that you have folks running the company and Star Trek Online who are passionate about the game and have played it for years,” Marrone said. “I can empathize with players because I’m a player. And, to use a cliche, I know where the bodies are buried. I know what we’ve tried in the past and what has and hasn’t worked. I also have an idea of why. But I’m excited to shake things up and try some new things or revisit old things in a different way, because like our players, I want to see Star Trek Online grow and I want even more of the Star Trek universe to explore.”
Marrone detailed his hopes for the future of Star Trek Online, referencing past “big swings” like the Wolf 359 Task Force Operation that came as part of Star Trek Online: Both Worlds.
“One of the things I’m very proud of is our Wolf 359 content from a couple years ago,” he said. “Recreating the battle as a TFO and being able to capture the urgency and fear, creating that immersive experience of a classic Star Trek moment… I’m just very proud of how all that came together. And of course, then giving players a new monument to visit in the world made the Star Trek universe feel a bit bigger, which I think is a crucial part of why people play Star Trek Online in the first place.”
Marrone also said that his, “biggest hope is to help the game reconnect with folks who tried it a long time ago and left for whatever reason, as well as keeping a good relationship with the people who continue to play our game every day.”
Star Trek Online‘s 35th season kicks off today on PC with Corruption, an update that features Deep Space Nine‘s Nicole de Boer reprising her role as Captain Ezri Dax.
A huge thanks to Thomas for his time, speaking with me for this site and for TrekMovie.
Star Trek Online is free-to-play and currently available on Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, alongside Xbox One and PS4 consoles.
