Titanfall 2’s multiplayer tech test: Maps, modes, Networks, level caps and more

Stevivor took place in a pre-alpha tech test for Titanfall 2, and because of it, we’re able to show you just what to expect when you’re able to give a public tech test a go soon enough on both.

We’ve broken the test into chunks for your reading — and viewing — pleasure. Just don’t be too critical of our gameplay skills, eh?

Overall briefing

How better to learn of the tech test than from its developer, Respawn, directly. Here’s the intro video Pilots were shown ahead of gameplay. It explains a bunch of what’s about to happen.

Respawn confirmed with Stevivor that the tech test will be available on PS4 and on Xbox One. Windows PC wasn’t named as a platform, but we’ll update as we learn more.

Maps, modes and dates

In short, you’ll be able to play three modes and three maps over two weekends.

The first weekend will feature two modes — Pilots vs Pilots and Bounty Hunt — across two maps, Boomtown and Homestead. It runs between 19-21 August.

The second weekend features the content of weekend one, plus the Amped Hardpoint mode and the Forwardbase Kodai map. It runs the week after, over 27-28 August.

You’re able to see all maps and modes in gameplay capture below.

Level caps

You’ll be able to unlock new weapons and abilities as you progress different levels within the tech test.

On the first weekend, the level cap is locked to level 10. On the second weekend, the cap will be raised to level 15.

Networks

The pre-alpha will take advantage of the game’s new Networks feature.

Similar to the Xbox Live Party system, Networks will allow players to group outside of actual matches. Users can voice chat in-game, or text chat via Titanfall.com. One user in the Network can send a game invite to the entire group, and those who feel up to a game can elect to jump in.

Here’s a video showing a little on how Networks will operate.

We’ll be making a Stevivor Network, so keep an eye out for it!

Pilot training

Before you kick off into actual games, you’ll need to train.

You’ll be made to play through a short sequence detailing weapons and movement before given the chance to run a gauntlet.

Check it out in action below:

Pilots vs. Pilots mode

Pilots vs. Pilots mode is a Titanless mode where two teams worth of Pilots duke it out to the death.

You can see a taste of it below on the Forwardbase Kodai map.

Bounty Hunt mode

Bounty Hunt is a new mode that pits two teams of Pilots (and their Titans) against one another. Cash is raised by killing waves of NPCs, and that cash needs to be banked between rounds. Strategy comes into play because you can steal the cash of enemy Pilots by killing them before it can be banked.

Here’s a look at the mode on the Homestead map.

Amped Hardpoint mode

Amped Hardpoint is quite similar to the original Titanfall‘s Hardpoint mode, but with one catch: points can be capped twice, essentially. The first cap is normal, but the second cap is the titular amped one. It will earn you double points compared to a normal cap, but be warned — you need to stay on the point to keep that amped cap active.

You can see the mode in action on the Boomtown map, below:

There you have it, Pilots — so go and have at it!

Titanfall 2 heads to Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4 on 28 October. We covered its all-new single-player campaign last week.

Stevivor travelled to Los Angeles, CA to preview Titanfall 2 as a guest of Electronic Arts.
