Payday 2 developer goes back on promise to never include microtransactions in-game

Payday 2 developer Overkill has gone back on its word, adding microtransactions into the game after saying it would never happen.

“We’ve made it clear that Payday 2 will have no microtransactions whatsoever (shame on you if you thought otherwise!),” Overkill said on Steam back in May 2013.

Turns out, the shame’s actually on them — the game’s “Black Market” update has added safes that can only be opened with a drill that costs $2.49 USD. Worse yet, those specific drills cannot be earned in-game, meaning the only way to get them is to buy them with real-world cash.

Overkill is also under fire over a series of bugs that still plague the Xbox One version of the game. We reviewed that specific iteration here, and the game’s PC version here.

Thanks, Ryan.
