Prison of Elders is Destiny’s take on Horde mode

Destiny‘s Prison of Elders reveal today showed that its Bungie’s take on the classic Horde mode.

A PvE mode, you’ll be able to ally with friends or via matchmaking to form a three person team and take on waves of prisoners.

In Destiny nature, there’s a bit of story in there, but the gist of it is this: The Awoken Queen is pitting you against prisoners inside The Reef. Players will receive rewards for mowing down opponents.

Prison of Elders will feature four difficulty tiers, set at level 28, 32, 34 and 35. Each time you play, you’ll take part in four rounds of firefight; one for each race of Darkness in the game. Each round consists of three waves, with checkpoints only popping between rounds and not waves themselves.

While fighting it out, you’ll also have modifiers thrown at you — increasing your melee attack or similar, — and mandatory ‘Critical Objective’ goals such as capturing mine zones. Randomly throughout a game, a Scotch Cannon will spawn, allowing its users to wreak havoc across the map.

As you’d expect, rewards get better as you play through higher level difficulties.

Prison of Elders is part of Destiny‘s “House of Wolves” expansion, available from 19 May.
