Xbox head Phil Spencer has taken to Twitter to confirm that “longer standing engine reasons” are stopping Halo Wars 2 from offering cross-play multiplayer across Windows PC and Xbox One.
Spencer added he hopes this will be corrected going forward.
@KeenS805 I hope so, that's our goal. HW2 doesn't for some longer standing engine reasons but going forward cross-play is a good feature.

Sadly, Halo Wars 2 also lacks HDR support on Xbox One S.
Despite these setbacks, Halo Wars 2 is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning one digital purchase unlocks the game across both PC and Xbox One. Game Saves and Achievements will transition between the two platforms.
