Death Stranding release date, special editions, pre-order bonuses revealed

A ton of new Death Stranding details dropped overnight, including the game’s release date, special editions, pre-order bonuses and a new trailer. Let’s get into it all, shall we?

Release date

A new Death Stranding trailer, edited by Hideo Kojima himself, confirms that the game will head to PS4 on 8 November 2019.

Gameplay description

An updated game listing confirms gameplay aspects of the title, including its take on a game over screen alongside a confirmation the game will feature asynchronous online multiplayer.

“In the near future, mysterious explosions have rocked the globe, setting off a series of supernatural events known as the Death Stranding. With otherworldly creatures plaguing the landscape, and mass extinction imminent, it’s up to Sam Porter Bridges to travel across the ravaged wasteland and save humanity from impending annihilation,” the listing reads.

“There is no traditional ‘game over’ state in Death Stranding. Lose your life during combat and you’ll find yourself in an upside-down realm, searching for a way back to the living. Choose your combat methods carefully, as killing your foe is almost never the solution – and every death carries a consequence.

“Help other travellers without ever crossing paths via asynchronous online gameplay. Send supplies, share safe houses and walk in the footsteps of fellow couriers to reunite civilisation.”

New trailer

“People have built ‘Walls’ and become accustomed to living in isolation. Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the player’s goal is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. All elements, including the story and the gameplay, are bound together by the theme of ‘Strand,’ or connection,” Hideo Kojima said in a statement that accompanied the trailer (below).

“As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to ‘Bridge’ these divisions, and in doing so, create new bonds or ‘Strands’ with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.”
