Sony’s Play Station prototype add-on for the SNES uncovered in an attic

Sony may dominate the console market today, but their entry into the field only came about after they were publicly snubbed and humiliated by Nintendo. The Sony Playstation was originally built as a CD add-on to the Super Nintendo, a piece of hardware that reached the prototype stage and was demonstrated at CES in 1991 but seemingly lost to the sands of time. Of 200 prototype units that were produced (and later ordered destroyed) none were known to still exist until recently, when Dan Diebold and his father Terry unearthed the incredibly rare hardware in an attic and posted images and video online, which you can see below:

You can read how the Diebold family managed to find themselves in possession of this rare hardware (along with all the pictures) over at Polygon, and see the full reveal on Reddit. Currently Dan Diebold is looking to source a power supply for the unit to test the cartridge and CD in the system. That footage will certainly be fascinating, but for now just finding a piece of hardware believed to be gone is astounding enough.
