Star Wars Battlefront III is considered part of the franchise’s official canon

Star Wars fans, distraught at Disney’s recent revelation that the franchise’s long-standing “expanded universe” books and video games are now considered outside of canon, can rest a little easier today: EA’s Star Wars Battlefront III is considered part of the new universe’s lore.

“While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the expanded universe consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon,” Lucasfilm confirmed via blog post. “Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected.”

This means Star Wars Battlefront III joins the six cinematic films and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series as official pieces of the new universe canon.

Star Wars Battlefront III is expected near the end of 2015.
