Preview: Lego Batman 2

For a game called Lego Batman 2, I don’t think many of us previewers actually spent time yesterday PLAYING as Batman or Robin.

We had the chance to get hands-on with the title, and many of the game’s new cast of characters. I didn’t get to play through an actual level of the game, but instead explored the open world of (Lego) Gotham City, and could switch between a variety of DC Super Heroes.

I took to the sky as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Superman, and their flight mechanics are pretty much identical to the Batwing sequences of the previous Lego Batman title. The flying characters can traverse the city and find pockets of baddies to beat up, and obviously in the full title, can move from level portal to portal.

Cyborg, Batman and Robin played largely the same…and the same as in Lego Batman as well. Actually, as soon as they hit the ground, so too do Wonder Woman and company…though, there’s no complaints there. Combat in the series is quite simple, yet still enjoyable.

Even though I’m a bit of an admitted Flash fan, but controlling that particular character brought me the most enjoyment. He has an actual sense of speed when you’re moving through levels, and that velocity made me quite giddy.

In short, Lego Batman 2 is everything you’d expect it to be. The same Lego series mechanics, this time with a touch of variety.

Lego Batman 2 will be available on 22 June on PC, PS3, PS Vita, 3DS, Wii and Xbox 360.
