Preview: DmC: Devil May Cry

While in the offices of our good friends at THQ recently, I got my hands on the Devil May Cry (DmC) code that was on show at Captivate 2012 (if you missed it, here’s a handy link), so I thought I’d post some brief impressions.

Firstly, I’d have to say it looked GREAT. Pitched as a prequel to reboot of the DmC series, this new DmC casts a young (and raven-haired) Dante into a world pitching into darkness. I’m not certain I’m a huge fan of Dante’s new emo sensibilities, but the environments, the character detail, and the moveset are all just GORGEOUS. In some ways, it did remind me of Shadows of the Damned, but I guess the content is similar. There were some cheeky references added in as well – mostly around the number “5” (this being the fifth in the series).

That said, the game played in much the same way as it had in the past. Dante does have some new moves to play with in regards to how he manipulates the environment, but this is mostly related to how he traverses the world than how he fights his battles – and this is where DmC has always shined.

So how does it play? When I wasn’t running into glitches (this is normal, though… Keep in mind this was very early code – the game is not due for release until January 2013), I was having a blast – literally. Dante still has his trusty pistols and wields a deadly blade, and he can still switch between them on the fly. There are some new demon moves he can pull to take on more deadly foes, which does switch things up a little, but there wasn’t enough of these moves to really change things up. In fact, some of these more deadly foes took quite a few hits to take down, and it did become a bit of a spamfest, but was still enjoyable nonetheless.

Overall, the game looks great and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. For one, I hear this title does explain how Dante received his white hair, so that should be interesting, but more of the same is fine by me – especially when the environments look this good. Think of how impressed you were when you first took on one of the titans in God of War. I was that impressed simply by some of the set pieces. Bravo.

Update: As one of our sharp and up-to-date readers has pointed out in the comments below, this is in fact a reboot of the Devil May Cry series, and not a remake. Naughty Greg! Naughty! Thank you, NameSource!
