I’ll freely admit that I haven’t spent a lot of time with Borderlands 2, but after just 30 minutes with its newest DLC, “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep,” I really want to get back into it.
Taking the piss out of Dungeons & Dragons, “Tiny Tina’s Assault” begins as the Vault Hunters sit down to play a game of Bunkers & Bad-asses — Gearbox’s take on D&D — with Tina taking point as the fictional game’s “Bunker Master.”
It’s quite hard to write about the fourth and final piece of DLC for Borderlands 2 from this point onwards, as all I want to do is tell you all of the amazing jokes that are littered throughout what I was able to play through. I’ll save those experiences for your first go at the content, but trust me – even without being a D&D fan, it was literally a reference (and a corresponding joke) a minute. And they were all hilarious.
Classic Borderlands 2 style gameplay hasn’t been touched — and is always a treat — but it felt like Gearbox had tweaked lighting settings for the game, making things look just that little bit prettier. It helped that as Tina was narrating your experience as the Bunker Master, your environments dynamically changed around you. If a locale is too pretty, well, Tina will change the story up; before your very eyes, beautiful meadows become terrifying forests, and so on. It’s a sight to behold.
Tina’s… interesting… take on game narration also does some cool things to the gameplay of “Tiny Tina’s Assault.” You’ll be thrown up against invincible bosses one minute, and other hijinx the next; in short — and usually through laughing fits — the game really keeps you on your toes.
Additionally, Pandora takes on the aesthetics of a fantasy title due to the nature of the D&D-like premise, which means you get a cool Borderlands-styled take on the whole fantasy genre. Let me tell you, I’d be far more likely to play Skyrim if it looked like “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep.”
As for who’ll be excited for the new content? Let’s be honest: if you enjoy Borderlands 2, you’re going to enjoy “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep.” If you’re a D&D fan with access to Borderlands 2, you should definitely pick up the new pack for its humour alone.
