Zelda: Breath of the Wild trailer introduces a name and new abilities

Nintendo opened its new format E3 stream by finally unveiling a name for the upcoming The Legend of Zelda game, first confirmed as being in development in 2013.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be released for Wii U and NX in March 2017. Nintendo has confirmed that the game will be the same across both platforms, so there’s no need to grab both.

In announcing the name, Nintendo released a three-minute gameplay trailer showcasing new weapons and abilities for Link against the backdrop of a vibrant and varied world.

The trailer begins with an unknown female voice (Zelda?) telling Link to “open his eyes”. That sets him on a path to explore the new open world Hyrule through parachuting, swimming and, in a first for the series, climbing and jumping — yes, Link can jump for the first time.

The classic sword and bow combo returns, joined by a spear, axe and briefly even body armour. Most surprising, Link is never shown in his traditional green tunic — and we have never seen him wear it since the first footage was unveiled at E3 2014.

After the announcement, Nintendo shifted its focus to Pokémon Sun and Moon. But don’t worry, there’s plenty more Breath of the Wild to come. Rather than a single hour-long event to announce everything, Nintendo is hosting several Treehouse Live streams today to unveil detailed new information about specific elements of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
