WGL APAC 2015 Season I Finals: Get to know the competing teams

With just hours to go before the first of the Wargaming.net WGL APAC 2015 Season 1 Finals begin, we thought we’d provide a little background info on its competitors.

Four teams have fought hard to earn their place at the Finals, with Korean team KONGOO representing that region’s server, Japanese team Caren Tiger and Chinese team EL Gaming coming from the Asian server, and finally Chinese team RefornGaming earning a spot through the ESL-sponsored KongZhong Arena.

Caren Tiger is described as “the Pride of Japan” by the Wargaming.net Esports department. The team placed 3rd at the WGL APAC 2014 Season 2 Finals. The team is most recently riding a string of several ESL-sponsored WoT tournament wins. In a pre-match briefing, Caren Tiger has promised a “a special strategy” for this Final, going as far to say spectators have never seen anything like it before.

Coming from the Asian server, EL Gaming is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. The team looks great on paper, but three times have earned second place in Season and Grand Finals played. The China pro team is obviously looking to prove themselves this time around, though despite this, carried themselves all throughout pre-match briefings with a great air of confidence.

RefornGaming earned its spot in the WGL APAC 2015 Season 1 Finals through a win at the KongZhong Arena League Season 1. Reforn is a bit of a wildcard; masked in an air of mystery, not much is known about the relatively new Chinese team. Even then, RefornGaming is considered one of the Finals’ top two threats — but only by the slightest margin. At the pre-match pressers, Reforn’s players looked the most timid, verging on intimidated; its members admitted that Finals experiences like this were new to them.

Formerly called ARETE, the newly-renamed KONGDOO took out all three WGL APAC Season Finals in 2014. With the rename came a reshuffle; not all ARETE members made the move to KONGDOO. Playing in their home country, this Korean team is expected to walk away as the Finals champion. But will the pressure prove to be too much?

There are plenty of opportunities for revenge presenting themselves at the WGL APAC 2015 Season I Finals this weekend. In past Finals encounters, KONGDOO (as ARETE) beat out EL Gaming, as did RefornGaming, though RefornGaming bested Caren Tiger. Though KONGDOO and RefornGaming are favourites, it truly feels like any of the four teams competing could end up as the 2015 Season I Finals champions.
