Tekken creator claims controversial new character is exclusive to Asia and Europe

As sure as the sun will rise, fans of a long running series will be resistant to change. In this case, it is Tekken 7 fans, who took to the internet to hassle Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada about the character design of the recently announced Lucky Chloe, asking for her to be removed. Harada has granted their wish.

Lucky Chloe will be exclusive the the East Asia and European versions of the game, a slightly baffling decision in this digital age. Harada pulled no punches, claiming Western gamers preferred “muscular and skinhead” characters, and that there will be more new characters revealed for Tekken 7.

Both sides are in the wrong on this one, although developers should know better than to engage on ‘forum rage’ terms. A cute, scantily clad, costumed female character was always going to get some backlash, especially when Lucky Chloe comes across as a stereotype for Eastern pandering. Stereotyping Western gamers as preferring skinhead, muscle bound male characters isn’t going to win any favour, either. Tekken fans may be overprotective of their long running series, but surely Harada has faced criticism before. This wasn’t the way to handle it.
