Square Enix CEO cites Microsoft’s “passion for Tomb Raider” as reason for exclusivity deal

In an interview with Examiner, Square Enix CEO of America and Europe Phil Rogers has attempted to explain the decisions that led to Rise of the Tomb Raider becoming an Xbox One timed exclusive, unavailable on PC until early 2016 and PS4 until one year after the Xbox One release.

Rogers acknowledged that the exclusivity decision would “disappoint fans” but also justified the move by claiming that “Microsoft’s passion for Tomb Raider is amazing.” It is a sentiment he reiterates several times in the interview and while he does say Microsoft Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has made regular visits to the studio to talk to the development team and play the game it is hard to see where Microsoft’s passion for Tomb Raider lies outside of them heaping money at Square Enix for development and marketing.

Rise of the Tomb Raider arrives 10 November for Xbox One, early 2016 for PC and late 2016 for PS4.
