A Digital Foundry report states that almost half of the PS4’s onboard RAM will be is reserved for the console’s operating system (OS).
Digital Foundry says that the 3.5GB of RAM will be reserved for streaming functionality on the OS, leaving 4.5GB for games to use exclusively.
This reservation isn’t absolute, however. “Sources close to Sony” have said that developers can request an additional gigabyte of RAM for their game, providing the PS4 OS can spare it.
Recent reports suggest the Xbox One will reserve 3GB for its own OS. Before Microsoft fans claim victory, don’t forget that the PS4 contains faster GDDR5 RAM, compared to the Xbox One’s DDR3.
