Sony: 4.2 million PS4s sold as of 28 December 2013

Yesterday Sony announced that worldwide sales of its new PlayStation 4 console had reached 4.2 million units as of 28 December 2013.

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House was suitably pleased with the results saying, “The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network.“

In addition to the strong sales of the PS4 hardware, Sony revealed that over 9.7 million games had been sold physically at retail with the number growing even higher when digital sales through the PlayStation Store are taken into account. Top selling games include FIFA 14, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV, Battlefield 4 and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

“After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014,” House added.

PlayStation 4 launched in North America 15 November then Australia, Europe and elsewhere 29 November. The console is currently out of stock in Australia, but Sony has promised that consoles will be available early 2014.
